The Launch
Whataburger is expanding its Bacon Wrangler limited-time platform for the first time since the line debuted last summer, adding a chicken variant alongside the returning beef option and giving the San Antonio-based chain a two-SKU LTO to drive incremental traffic across its 1,200-plus-unit footprint beginning Aug. 18.
The Bacon Wrangler Double — two fresh, 100% beef patties with American and Monterey Jack cheeses, bacon, crispy onion strings, pickles, and smoky chipotle aioli — is priced from $9.99, with a Jr. size available for value-oriented guests. The new Bacon Wrangler Chicken, starting at $7.99, offers three filet options: classic Whatachick'n, Spicy Chicken, or Grilled Chicken, each finished with Monterey Jack cheese, bacon, and the platform's signature toppings. Prices vary by location.
Platform Strategy
The line extension reflects a broader pattern among regional quick-service operators: using proven LTO flavor profiles as a launchpad for protein diversification. By migrating the Bacon Wrangler's smoky chipotle-and-bacon build onto chicken, Whataburger targets a different purchase occasion and price point without developing an entirely new flavor architecture. The $7.99 chicken entry sits roughly $2.00 below the beef double, potentially broadening the platform's appeal among more price-sensitive dayparts.
"The Bacon Wrangler Double earned plenty of fans after its debut last year," said Whataburger Corporate Chef James Sanchez. "This time around, we wanted to give Guests another way to enjoy those same craveable flavors by introducing the all-new Bacon Wrangler Chicken."
For QSR operators, chicken continues to outperform beef in menu innovation velocity, with the protein commanding a growing share of LTO launches industrywide as input costs for chicken remain comparatively favorable. Whataburger's move aligns with that trend while keeping the Bacon Wrangler name — already carrying brand equity from last year's run — front of mind for repeat customers.
Distribution and Timing
Both items are available at participating locations for a limited time, with no end date disclosed. The chain operates more than 1,200 restaurants across 17 states, primarily concentrated in the Sun Belt. Whataburger also distributes original-recipe retail products through grocery channels, adding a parallel revenue stream that LTO buzz can support indirectly by keeping brand awareness elevated between store visits.
The launch is supported by the Whataburger App, where new account holders receive a complimentary Whataburger sandwich and begin accumulating loyalty points — a mechanism the chain uses to drive digital order capture and repeat visits. The app's loyalty integration gives Whataburger granular data on how Bacon Wrangler Chicken performs relative to the Double, informing whether the chicken variant earns a permanent or recurring slot, a calculus increasingly central to menu engineering decisions across fast-food chains.
