WK Kellogg Co has opened a 3,500-square-foot Corporate Archives facility at its Battle Creek, Michigan headquarters, housing more than 30,000 items and positioning the collection as an active resource for product and marketing strategy rather than a passive repository.

The investment, which began converting existing space in 2023, is timed to American Archives Month and underscores the cereal maker's effort to anchor contemporary brand decisions — particularly around nutrition labeling — in more than a century of documented consumer education work.

The Collection

The archive holds historic packaging, advertising and marketing materials, artwork, memorabilia and audiovisual assets spanning the company's origins in 1894 to the present. Among the items preserved are materials from 1923, when Mary Barber became the Kellogg Company's first registered dietitian and established its Home Economics Department. PEP, introduced in 1938, was the company's first fortified cereal, carrying vitamins B and D; by 1939 Kellogg was among the first consumer packaged goods manufacturers to voluntarily print nutrition information on pack. In the 1950s, Special K was promoted as a dietary source of protein — a positioning that remains central to the brand today.

"Our archives are much more than a place to preserve artifacts. They help us tell the story of where we've been and provide inspiration for where we're going," said Stacy Flathau, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at WK Kellogg Co.

From Archive to Aisle

The most direct commercial expression of that heritage is SPOONS, an evidence-based on-pack nutrition guide WK Kellogg Co rolled out earlier this year. The acronym covers six attributes: Simple Ingredients, Protein, Outstanding Fiber, Other Nutritious Foods, Nutrients You Need and Single-Digit Added Sugar. The system is designed to let retailers and shoppers navigate the cereal set by specific nutritional priorities — a category-management tool as much as a consumer-facing label.

Fiber is the clearest through-line between the archive and the current portfolio. Kellogg's All-Bran advertising dates to the 1920s, and the fiber message has evolved alongside shifting dietary science ever since. Today, nearly 95% of Americans fall short of recommended daily fiber intake, according to the company. WK Kellogg addresses that gap with more than 140 cereal options rated as at least a good source of fiber, delivering between 3 and 17 grams per serving. In fiscal year 2025, the company reported that its cereals provided more than 6 billion servings of fiber to consumers across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

What It Means for Operators

For grocery buyers and category managers, the SPOONS rollout signals that WK Kellogg is moving away from legacy front-of-pack claims toward a structured, multi-attribute disclosure framework — one that could influence shelf-set negotiations and promotional tie-ins. The archive, positioned as an innovation reference rather than a museum, reinforces continuity of brand equity at a time when the cereal category faces pressure from high-protein breakfast alternatives. WK Kellogg's brand portfolio includes Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, Rice Krispies, Froot Loops, Kashi, Special K, Kellogg's Raisin Bran and Bear Naked, giving the company broad shelf presence across conventional and natural grocery channels.

Flathau framed the initiative as both a heritage exercise and a forward-looking commitment: "Today, we're building on that foundation by helping make nutrition easier for consumers to understand and continuing to evolve our foods to meet their needs."
