Zacapa Rum (www.zacaparum.com), the Diageo-owned ultra-premium Guatemalan rum brand, is launching the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition on October 15 at a $49.99 suggested retail price — the brand's first limited-edition expression outside its standing North American lineup. Distribution opens in New York, California, Texas and Florida, targeting fine liquor retailers, bars and restaurants.
The Liquid
Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, who has led Zacapa's blending program for more than 40 years, assembled rums aged between 8 and 24 years through the brand's Solera System — a sequential cask progression through American whiskey barrels, Sherry wine casks, Pedro Ximénez wine casks and re-charred American white oak. The defining step for the anniversary expression is a final maturation in American white oak barrels specially charred with Guatemalan cacao and Cobán chili peels, followed by several months of rest in oak vats before bottling. That process imparts what the brand describes as roasted cacao aromatics, toffee and aromatic spice on the palate, with a warm, lingering finish.
Vásquez drew the cacao-and-chili concept from pre-Columbian ceremonial tradition in Guatemala, where beverages combining those two ingredients marked communal gatherings. "For the 50th Anniversary Edition, I drew inspiration from ancient ceremonial celebrations in what is now Guatemala, where beverages made with cacao and chili were traditionally enjoyed as part of these gatherings," she said. "We wanted to honor that heritage while exploring a new expression of Zacapa through maturation."
Route to Market
The on-premise activation strategy centers on a signature cocktail — the GuateMai Tai, combining the anniversary expression with orange liqueur, orgeat, fresh lime juice and aromatic bitters — available at select accounts. Vásquez will also conduct a series of intimate tastings in key U.S. markets, a format increasingly common among ultra-premium spirits brands seeking to convert trial into repeat purchase at higher price points.
The bottle itself arrives in a commemorative canister carrying Zacapa's signature handwoven petate band, reimagined in a colorful milestone design. Packaging differentiation at this tier is a meaningful commercial lever: limited-edition collectible formats have consistently commanded shelf placement and press attention in the premium spirits segment, where visual identity drives gifting and collectibility.
Industry Context
The launch arrives as the ultra-premium rum category continues to attract trade attention previously dominated by aged Scotch and tequila. Operators and beverage alcohol buyers have flagged aged rum as one of the higher-growth sub-categories in on-premise spirits programming, driven by consumer familiarity with complex aged profiles and price points that remain accessible relative to comparably aged whiskies. At $49.99 SRP, the 50th Anniversary Edition sits within the established sweet spot for limited-edition rum releases targeting both collectors and casual premium buyers.
Zacapa is owned by Diageo (LSE: DGE; NYSE: DEO), whose portfolio spans Johnnie Walker, Don Julio, Ketel One and Guinness, among others. The parent company's distribution infrastructure positions Zacapa for rapid placement in the four launch states, which collectively represent a significant share of on-premise spirits volume in the United States.
