Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG) posted first-quarter fiscal 2027 net sales of $2.6 billion, a 1.4% decline from the year-prior period, as volume pressure across its domestic retail segments outpaced modest pricing gains and the favorable tailwind from foreign exchange. Adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.41 rose 5.1% from $0.39 in the comparable quarter, ahead of the company's own profit expectations.
The Numbers
Organic net sales fell 1.1%, driven by a 2.1% volume decline that was partially offset by a 1.0% price/mix contribution. Gross profit dropped 3.4% to $619 million, and gross margin contracted 50 basis points to 23.8%, as cost-of-goods-sold inflation and unfavorable operating leverage outweighed productivity gains and approximately $4 million in tariff refunds. Adjusted operating margin of 11.5% nevertheless improved on a sequential basis as management reduced adjusted SG&A by 3.7% to $321 million — aided by a $10 million benefit tied to prior-year incentive compensation — and increased advertising and promotional spending 15.1% to $61 million. Equity method investment earnings, primarily from the Ardent Mills flour-milling joint venture, surged 71.8% to $50 million on favorable wheat-market dynamics, providing a significant lift to the bottom line. Net income rose 6.0% to $174 million on a reported basis, while adjusted net income gained 4.3% to $197 million. Adjusted EBITDA of $451 million was up 2.4% year over year.
Segment Divergence
Performance was uneven across the four operating segments. The Grocery & Snacks unit — which houses brands including Slim Jim, Angie's BOOMCHICKAPOP, and Hunt's — saw net sales decline 2.6% to $1.1 billion and adjusted operating profit fall 7.2% as a 5.4% organic volume drop overwhelmed a 3.4% price/mix gain. Management noted dollar-share gains in categories including chili, pudding, and hot dogs. The Refrigerated & Frozen segment, home to Birds Eye, Marie Callender's, and Healthy Choice, posted a 2.1% net sales decline to $1.1 billion, with adjusted operating profit down 13.0%. Foodservice was the clear standout: net sales rose 3.2% to $273 million on 3.3% organic growth, and operating profit advanced 11.4% to $31 million, though management acknowledged roughly 150 basis points of volume timing benefit from customer orders that shifted from the prior-year third quarter. The International segment grew net sales 2.7% to $218 million, aided by currency tailwinds, though adjusted operating profit slipped 8.6% to $34 million amid input-cost headwinds and incremental A&P investment. For analysts tracking the broader frozen food category performance and branded packaged-goods pricing dynamics, the divergence between retail volume weakness and foodservice resilience echoes trends seen across the sector.
Debt & Outlook
Free cash flow was negative $128 million in the quarter versus negative $26 million in the prior-year period, reflecting lower operating profit and higher litigation-related payments. Capital expenditures fell to $124 million from $147 million. Net debt stood at $7.4 billion as of August 30, 2026, representing a 2.5% reduction from a year earlier, and the trailing-twelve-month net leverage ratio of 3.99x tracks near the company's fiscal year-end target of approximately 4.0x. John Brase, president and chief executive officer of Conagra Brands, said the quarter reflected progress on margin restoration, complexity reduction, and A&P reinvestment, while noting that more work remains to be done. The company reaffirmed full-year fiscal 2027 guidance calling for organic net sales change of negative 3.0% to negative 1.0%, adjusted operating margin of 10.0% to 10.5%, and adjusted EPS of $1.40 to $1.50. Investors tracking the company's capital-allocation trajectory alongside broader packaged food earnings trends will note that free-cash-flow conversion guidance remains above 90% for the full year, even as first-quarter cash generation was pressured by working capital and litigation outflows.
