The Numbers
Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) posted total sales of $3.2 billion for its fiscal first quarter ended August 30, 2026, a 5.1% increase from $3.044 billion in the prior-year period. Blended same-restaurant sales rose 3.1% on a fiscal calendar basis and 3.2% on a comparable calendar basis. Diluted net earnings per share from continuing operations came in at $2.05, a 4.1% increase versus the adjusted figure of $1.97 reported in Q1 fiscal 2026, though reported GAAP EPS for the prior period was $2.19 — a figure elevated by a $42.0 million gain on the Olive Garden Canada sale that did not recur.
Brand-Level Performance
LongHorn Steakhouse was the portfolio's standout, generating $860.9 million in segment sales — up from $776.4 million a year earlier — with same-restaurant sales accelerating 6.2% on a fiscal calendar basis and 6.8% on a comparable calendar basis. Segment profit for LongHorn reached $154.6 million, compared with $134.9 million in Q1 fiscal 2026, a gain of more than 14%. Olive Garden, the company's largest brand with 953 company-owned units, produced $1.329 billion in sales and $270.8 million in segment profit, with same-store sales up a more modest 1.1%. The Fine Dining segment — which includes Ruth's Chris Steak House, The Capital Grille, and Eddie V's — contributed $304.2 million in revenue and $39.6 million in segment profit, while the Other Business segment, which encompasses Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, Chuy's, Yard House, and Seasons 52, added $705.4 million in sales and $111.5 million in profit. All four segments delivered positive same-restaurant sales growth for the quarter.
Notably, Bahama Breeze's unit count contracted sharply to 10 locations from 28 a year ago, as Darden continues to wind down or convert those sites ahead of a planned full exit by Q4 fiscal 2027. Total company-owned restaurant count across continuing operations stood at 2,218 as of August 30, up from 2,165 a year earlier, driven primarily by net openings at Olive Garden, LongHorn, and Chuy's. Capital expenditures for the quarter were $175.3 million, roughly flat with the $174.1 million deployed in Q1 fiscal 2026, signaling continued investment in new unit development and existing restaurant infrastructure. For full-service restaurant operators and foodservice investors tracking unit economics, pre-opening costs rose to $8.5 million from $5.9 million a year ago, consistent with an accelerating development pipeline.
Capital Return and Outlook
Darden's board declared a quarterly cash dividend of $1.62 per share, payable November 2, 2026, to shareholders of record as of October 9. During the quarter, the company repurchased approximately 1.1 million shares for $222.3 million, inclusive of the 1% excise tax under the Inflation Reduction Act. As of quarter-end, $1.3 billion remained available under the current $1.5 billion repurchase authorization.
President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Cardenas described the quarter as "a solid start to our fiscal year," noting that each segment delivered positive comparable sales and reiterating that the company's scale and brand differentiation remain its primary competitive levers. Management reaffirmed all components of its full-year fiscal 2027 financial outlook, projecting diluted net earnings per share from continuing operations of "$11.10 to $11.35." For context on how Darden's casual-dining performance compares across the broader restaurant sector, LongHorn's accelerating traffic trends stand out at a time when many full-service chains are managing cautious consumer spending. Investors and foodservice industry analysts will watch whether that momentum carries into Q2 as the calendar shifts to the slower fall season.
