The Appointment

ELLMAN Estate Winery, the family-owned Napa Valley estate on the Silverado Trail, has named Michael Ploetz as General Manager, effective immediately. The hire marks both a leadership transition and a maturation milestone: Ploetz steps in as the estate completes its first full year welcoming guests, having brought winemaking operations home from external custom-crush facilities and opened The Studio, its dedicated tasting space at the base of Soda Canyon beneath Atlas Peak.

Background and Credentials

Ploetz joined ELLMAN in early 2026 as Estate and Sales Director, working alongside outgoing General Manager Justin Vazquez, who held the role for eight years and guided the estate from its first vintage through the physical opening of the property. The transition is described as a planned handoff; Vazquez will move into a brand and creative capacity as he launches a separate creative studio. Ploetz brings more than two decades of luxury hospitality experience, including senior food and beverage leadership positions with The Peninsula Hotels and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, as well as operational and opening roles with the José Andrés Group across Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In Napa Valley specifically, he has led direct-to-consumer and hospitality programs at estates associated with winemakers Michel Rolland, Philippe Melka, and Jennifer Williams — a résumé that spans both global hotel brands and the region's high-end wine hospitality corridor.

"After twenty years in luxury hospitality, I've learned that the most memorable places are not simply impressive; they are warm, personal, and deeply welcoming," Ploetz said. "Guests feel at ease from the moment they arrive, as if they have been invited into the Ellman family's home."

Estate Context

Founded by vintners Lance Ellman and Neil Ellman, whose family roots trace to Stellenbosch, South Africa, the estate's 20-acre vineyard was planted in 1999 to the "Palmer" clone of Cabernet Sauvignon in cobbled, well-drained soils over an ancient riverbed. The family produced its first estate wine from that fruit in 2016. The wine program is led by winemaker Andy Erickson, whose Napa Valley credits include Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Dalla Valle, working alongside associate winemaker Patrick Nyeholt and vineyard manager Domenick Bianco. The flagship release is the Elaine Cabernet Sauvignon, a two-barrel bottling made only in select vintages.

In his new role, Ploetz will oversee hospitality, membership, and growth strategy across what is now a fully integrated estate — farming, production, and direct-to-consumer sales operating from a single site. That consolidation, from custom-crush dependency to on-premises winemaking, is a capital-intensive inflection point common among premium Napa Valley producers seeking greater margin control and brand authenticity. The direct-to-consumer channel — mailing lists and standing allocations — remains the estate's primary sales vehicle, a model that places outsized importance on the quality of the guest experience and membership retention.

"Michael understands that vision," said Neil Ellman, proprietor. "He brings the care and precision this estate deserves, and he shares our belief that a great winery is built on relationships as much as on the land."

For operators tracking luxury wine hospitality and DTC channel development, the ELLMAN appointment reflects a broader pattern of Napa estates importing talent from high-end hotel brands to professionalize guest programming as tasting-room revenue grows in strategic importance.
