Flowers Foods, one of the largest packaged-bakery producers in the United States with 2025 net sales of $5.3 billion, has elected Shaun P. Mara and Ken Plunk as independent directors, effective Nov. 18, 2026. Both appointments carry seats on the company's audit and finance committees, expanding the board to 10 members.
The New Directors
Mara brings more than three decades of consumer products finance experience. He retired in June 2025 as chief financial officer of The Simply Good Foods Company, where he helped direct growth strategy and the integration of the Quest brand after the company's public-market debut. Earlier roles included CFO positions at Dean Foods, Teasdale Latin Foods, and Roofing Supply Group, along with senior finance leadership at the William Wrigley Jr. Company and Gillette. He previously chaired the audit committee at Farmer Bros. Co.
Plunk's résumé spans consumer packaged goods, retail, manufacturing, and international operations. He served as CFO and senior vice president of information technology at J&J Snack Foods, where he shaped capital investment, supply chain expansion, and acquisition strategy. He held senior finance and audit roles at Walmart and worked at The Coca-Cola Company and The Home Depot. Plunk currently sits on the boards of WD-40 Company and Milo's Tea Company, with committee responsibilities covering audit, finance, risk, and governance.
Why It Matters
The dual appointment signals that Flowers Foods is prioritising financial discipline and integration capability at the board level. Chairman and CEO Ryals McMullian said the two directors' "broad financial and transformation experience will be valuable as we continue to strengthen our portfolio, sharpen execution, and transform Flowers for future growth." The comment echoes language the company has used around its acquisition of Simple Mills, a better-for-you snack and baking brand that extended Flowers beyond its core bread and sweet-goods lines.
The packaged-bakery category faces persistent pressure from private-label competition and shifting consumer preferences toward health-oriented formats, dynamics that have prompted Flowers to diversify through bolt-on acquisitions and premiumise its brand portfolio. Adding two executives with deep M&A integration track records — Mara at Simply Good Foods and Plunk at J&J Snack Foods — reinforces the board's capacity to oversee complex transactions and post-merger execution. Flowers' brand stable includes Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Canyon Bakehouse, Simple Mills, Wonder, and Tastykake.
