The Threat to Agriculture

Flyttr, the Virginia-headquartered biosecurity company, announced plans on Monday to open the United States' first large-scale pest biosecurity platform in San Antonio, Texas — a facility exceeding 130,000 square feet designed to accelerate the development and manufacture of countermeasures against biological threats to American livestock, crops, and public health. The New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that poses a direct and costly danger to the U.S. cattle and livestock sector, is the platform's inaugural target.

New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) was eradicated from the continental United States in 1966 through a sustained sterile insect technique (SIT) program, but re-emergence pressure from Central and South America has put the livestock industry on alert. The parasite attacks living tissue in warm-blooded animals, causing severe wounds and death if untreated — a threat with material implications for cattle producers, meatpackers, and the broader beef supply chain. Any outbreak on U.S. soil would trigger immediate trade restrictions, production disruptions, and elevated costs across foodservice and retail channels.

FastFly and Federal Backing

Flyttr's first program at the San Antonio site, called FastFly, is an accelerated manufacturing initiative designed to add domestically produced sterile flies to the national response being led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The project carries backing from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as part of a whole-of-government approach. The company said its modular manufacturing design — built to be deployed quickly, relocated, and reconfigured for different pest threats — represents a structural shift from legacy biosecurity infrastructure, which typically takes years to stand up.

"Pest biosecurity is national security," said Grey Frandsen, Chief Executive Officer of Flyttr. "The screwworm is the first target, but this builds on Flyttr's ongoing work in rapidly developing and scaling new pest sentry systems, AI-powered decision-support tools, and advanced biological solutions to target vectors of diseases like dengue and malaria, pest threats to American corn and soy, and to our nation's forests."

Scale and Local Ecosystem

The San Antonio facility will initially add more than 50 research and development, engineering, operations, and support positions, with headcount expected to grow beyond 100 as the platform scales. The site adds to Flyttr's existing laboratory space at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute — a strategic partnership in place since June 2026 — and complements the company's broader global network of R&D and commercial facilities.

San Antonio's selection reflects its established biosecurity infrastructure and research talent base. Larry Schlesinger, MD, President and CEO of Texas Biomed, described the facility as "an exciting next step forward in our efforts to combat New World screwworm and strengthen our region's biotech innovation ecosystem."

For food and beverage industry operators, the development carries practical supply-chain significance. A screwworm resurgence in the U.S. would ripple through cattle inventories, pushing beef input costs higher and compressing margins for processors and foodservice buyers already navigating elevated protein prices. Livestock biosecurity investment of this scale — government-backed, privately executed — represents a structural hedge for an industry segment that contributed more than $80 billion to U.S. agricultural output in recent years. Analysts tracking agricultural supply-chain risk and protein commodity markets have flagged screwworm re-emergence as a tail risk worth monitoring closely.
