Mars Snacking is extending its Skittles portfolio with Skittles Gummy Crystals, a product that combines soft gummy centers with a tangy, crunchy edible-crystal exterior — the brand's latest bid to capture share in the multi-texture candy segment ahead of a full U.S. national retail rollout in 2027.
The new SKU launches in two varieties: Original, carrying Strawberry, Lemon, Grape, Orange, and Green Apple flavors; and Tropical Splash, featuring Fruit Punch, Pink Lemonade, Mango Melon, Pineapple, and Watermelon. Both are positioned as incremental line extensions to the existing Skittles gummy franchise, which already includes Skittles Gummies, Skittles Gummies Fuego, Skittles POP'd, and Skittles Littles.
Channel Strategy
Mars, Incorporated is using TikTok Shop as the exclusive early-access window, opening sales November 2 as a limited bundle while supplies last. Select brick-and-mortar retailers will follow later in 2026, with national distribution commencing in 2027. The sequenced rollout reflects a broader industry pattern of deploying social-commerce platforms as test-and-learn channels before committing to full shelf placement — a tactic increasingly favored by major confectionery and snack manufacturers seeking to gauge velocity and consumer sentiment before locking in retail commitments. For operators and category buyers, the phased calendar signals that Gummy Crystals is unlikely to compete for significant shelf space until Q1 2027 at the earliest.
Texture as a Growth Driver
The product addresses a well-documented shift in consumer preference toward complex mouthfeel experiences within the confectionery aisle. Crunchy-coated gummies have emerged as one of the category's faster-growing subcategories over the past two years, driven by viral social content and the cross-pollination of textures from Asian candy formats into mainstream Western retail. Coverage of related confectionery innovation trends has tracked how legacy brands are responding to this demand with reformulations and hybrid formats rather than ceding ground to challenger brands.
"Consumer-led innovation is at the heart of Mars Snacking, and the true magic of Skittles lies in delivering the unexpected," said Ro Cheng, Marketing Vice President, Mars Snacking North America. "Skittles Gummy Crystals answers the growing demand for dynamic, multi-textured treats by pairing a soft gummy center with a crystal crunch — giving fans an entirely new way to experience the rainbow."
For retail buyers and category managers, the launch represents Mars Snacking's clearest signal yet that it intends to defend Skittles' positioning in the non-chocolate soft candy segment against both private-label gummy growth and specialty importers. Mars reported combined net sales — including the Kellanova integration — of more than $65 billion on a pro-forma basis, giving the company substantial trade-marketing firepower to support new SKU placement. As Food & Beverage Magazine has noted, Mars has been accelerating its snacking innovation pipeline since completing the Kellanova acquisition, and Gummy Crystals fits squarely within that strategy. Retailers evaluating planogram resets for 2027 should factor the brand's distribution ambitions into candy-aisle space allocation discussions. Additional context on how major manufacturers are navigating new product launch sequencing in confectionery underscores the complexity of managing social, select, and national rollout tiers simultaneously.
