Two Roles, One Mandate
Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. has appointed Kevin Zidron as Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer and Brad Hartzell as Chief Supply Chain Officer, the cooperative announced on September 21, adding two senior leaders as it enters its annual cranberry harvest season and its first full strategic cycle under President and CEO Abigail Buckwalter.
The dual hire signals a deliberate effort to tighten the link between planning and operational delivery at a cooperative that markets more than a thousand products across 100-plus countries. Buckwalter, who has been in the role for several months, framed the appointments around speed and discipline rather than structural overhaul. "Our focus now is on bringing those strengths together with greater clarity, pace and discipline to accelerate growth and unlock our full potential," she said.
The Executives
Zidron comes to Ocean Spray from Nestlé Health Science, where he most recently held a senior strategy role. His résumé also includes stints at Vital Proteins and Kraft Heinz, where he led enterprise strategy, commercial transformation and business-optimization programs across North American and global operations. At Ocean Spray he will oversee enterprise strategy, transformation, value capture, project management, and commercial strategy and insights — a scope that effectively consolidates growth planning under a single officer.
Hartzell succeeds Earl Larson, who is retiring at the end of September after nearly 22 years with the cooperative — a tenure that spans the brand's broad expansion into juice drinks, dried fruit, and ingredient categories. Hartzell brings more than 25 years of supply-chain and manufacturing leadership to the role. He most recently served as Chief Operating Officer, Beauty & Body Solutions at KDC/ONE Development Corporation and previously as Chief Operating Officer at NovaTaste. He also spent 18 years at International Flavors & Fragrances, culminating as Vice President, Operations, Flavors North America. Hartzell began his career in the U.S. Navy and holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD.
What It Means for the Cooperative
The appointments arrive at a moment when agricultural cooperatives in the food and beverage sector face compounding pressures: volatile commodity input costs, retailer consolidation, and growing competition from private-label and functional-beverage entrants in the juice aisle. For Ocean Spray specifically, the supply-chain role carries particular weight — the cooperative's vertically integrated model, spanning roughly 700 family farms across the United States, Canada, and Chile, means operational missteps ripple directly to farmer-owner returns.
Hartzell's background in ingredient and flavors manufacturing — categories defined by tight margin discipline and complex global sourcing — could prove relevant as Ocean Spray continues to develop its ingredient and health-focused product lines alongside its core juice and dried-fruit business. Zidron's commercial-transformation experience at Kraft Heinz, a company that has undergone significant portfolio rationalization over the past decade, suggests Ocean Spray may be positioning for sharper prioritization of its own brand and category investments.
The hires also reflect a broader pattern across the food and beverage industry, where mid-size cooperative and branded manufacturers have moved to bolster C-suite bench strength in strategy and operations as growth in the functional beverage segment pressures legacy juice brands to diversify and premiumize. Operators tracking executive movement in the food sector will note the emphasis on transformation credentials over pure category experience in both hires.
