Philip Morris International's U.S. businesses (uspmi.com) are broadening the ZYN nicotine pouch portfolio with new strength tiers and a second product line, moves the company frames as a direct response to the diverse cessation needs of an estimated 45 million legal-age American nicotine consumers.
The Expansion
The flagship ZYN dry pouch range, previously available in 3 mg and 6 mg, now adds 1.5 mg and 8 mg options across 13 flavors including Cool Mint, Black Cherry, Citrus, and Coffee. Alongside the strength expansion, PMI U.S. is rolling out ZYN ULTRA, a higher-moisture oral nicotine pouch carrying FDA marketing granted orders (MGO) for 11 SKUs — ten at 9 mg and one at 11 mg — issued in August 2026. The ULTRA line enters commerce under distinct retail names such as Arctic Mint, Wintergreen Blast, and Signature Smooth.
Regulatory Backdrop
The timing reflects an accelerating regulatory tailwind for the brand. ZYN became the first nicotine pouch authorized for U.S. sale following an FDA scientific review in January 2025. In June 2026, the agency went further, issuing modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) orders for 20 ZYN SKUs — the first such orders ever granted to a nicotine pouch — permitting PMI U.S. to communicate to adult consumers that switching from cigarettes to ZYN lowers the risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. That regulatory distinction gives ZYN a material marketing advantage over competing pouch brands that have not received MRTP status.
"Consumer choice matters," said Stacey Kennedy, CEO of PMI U.S. "We will continue to innovate to ensure we provide a portfolio of products that meet legal-age adults' diverse preferences so they can move away, and stay away, from combustible cigarettes."
Manufacturing and Packaging
To support higher volumes, PMI U.S. opened a 148-acre, approximately 780,000-square-foot manufacturing campus in Aurora, Colorado, which began commercial production in July 2026 and supplements existing operations in Owensboro, Kentucky. In Q4 2026, the company will also convert its 3 mg and 6 mg dry pouch cans from a legacy count to 20 pouches per can, a format change PMI U.S. says is supported by consumer preference research.
For convenience retailers and specialty tobacco chains, the portfolio expansion is significant. The oral nicotine pouch category has been one of the fastest-growing segments in the broader smokeless-tobacco set, and ZYN's MRTP authorization gives front-line sales teams a clinically grounded talking point unavailable to rivals. Adding entry-level (1.5 mg) and premium-strength (8 mg dry, 11 mg ULTRA) options effectively brackets the category, narrowing shelf space for competitors seeking to capture switchers at either end of the nicotine-preference spectrum.
The nicotine pouch category's retail trajectory has drawn attention across consumer packaged goods and supply-chain coverage alike, as manufacturers race to secure FDA authorization before potential rulemaking tightens market-access criteria. PMI U.S.'s dual authorization — both standard marketing orders and MRTP status — positions ZYN as the regulatory benchmark against which new entrants are measured.
