The Partnership

Unreal Snacks, the better-for-you chocolate brand that claims the largest and fastest-growing position in its U.S. segment, is using New York Fashion Week to extend its brand equity beyond the snack aisle. The company has collaborated with New York-based fashion designer Rachel Comey on the Coco Bag, a $425 limited-edition clutch that debuted across runway looks at Comey's Spring/Summer '27 show on September 9 — timed to mark the designer's 25th anniversary.

The bag's silver Tyvek exterior replicates the structure of an Unreal chocolate wrapper. Its interior features a graphic striped cotton lining drawn from both brands' visual identities, including custom pockets sized for Unreal's chocolate products. Pre-orders opened on September 9 at rachelcomey.com, with broader availability alongside the Spring/Summer '27 collection beginning February 1.

What It Signals

For Unreal, the activation is a brand-building exercise aimed at expanding consumer visibility beyond shelf placement at major retail accounts including Target, Whole Foods Market, Costco, Sprouts, Kroger, and Publix. Cross-category collaborations between food brands and fashion or lifestyle labels have become an increasingly common tool in the CPG playbook, used to generate earned media, reinforce brand identity, and reach audiences outside traditional grocery marketing channels.

Alison Whritenour, Chief Commercial Officer at Unreal, framed the project as an extension of the company's founding premise. "We've pushed the boundaries of what's possible in flavor and ingredient innovation to create a world where all food is 100% real," she said. "With the Coco Bag, we're taking the inside of our chocolate wrapper and putting it on the outside of a fashion accessory, giving good taste a whole new form."

For Comey, the collaboration reflects a longer personal connection to the product. The designer noted she has consumed Unreal's Dark Chocolate Coconut Bars and Peanut Butter Cups while working on collections for years, and described the brand's packaging as a "found material" that informed the bag's concept.

Runway and Retail Activation

The NYFW footprint extends beyond the bag itself. Food designer Alice Malaret styled curated food installations front-of-house and backstage at the Comey show, using the visual language of the Coco Bag across surfaces and displays to create what the brands describe as an edible landscape. The dual-environment activation — runway and event space — mirrors a broader shift in how food brands are approaching fashion week as a media moment rather than merely a sponsorship slot.

The Coco Bag's $425 retail price positions it firmly as a collectible rather than a volume play, consistent with the limited-edition collaboration model used by brands seeking cultural cachet. Unreal's distribution footprint — which also includes Amazon and Thrive Market — means the brand has the retail depth to convert any awareness spike from NYFW press into incremental unit sales across existing channels. For operators and buyers tracking the better-for-you chocolate segment, the activation underscores how leading brands in the category are investing in brand-level storytelling as a complement to conventional trade marketing and retail distribution strategies.

The collaboration also fits a broader pattern in the food and beverage industry's approach to lifestyle brand-building, where snack and confectionery companies increasingly pursue fashion, art, and design partnerships to differentiate in a crowded segment.
