Rabobank North America has confirmed Christiaan ter Haar as its permanent Chief Operating Officer, effective July 1, 2026, ending a five-month interim posting that began in late February. The appointment caps a recruitment process that ultimately returned to an internal candidate with two decades of institutional experience at the cooperative bank, which is one of the world's largest lenders specialising in food, agribusiness, and energy finance.

The Appointment

Ter Haar joined Rabobank North America more than 20 years ago and most recently served as Head of Technology, a role in which he built out the operational and digital infrastructure underpinning the bank's client-facing platforms. When the COO seat opened in early 2026, he stepped in on an interim basis and provided, in the bank's framing, operational continuity during a transitional period before being confirmed in the permanent role following a formal search.

Willem Boezen, Head and CEO of Rabobank North America, credited ter Haar's technology background as a key differentiator. "His contributions as Head of Technology, and more recently as interim COO, have strengthened the way our teams operate, collaborate and deliver for clients," Boezen said, adding that ter Haar brings "the discipline, perspective and steady leadership needed to continue evolving our platform."

Why It Matters for Agribusiness Finance

Rabobank's North American operation occupies a specialist niche in food and agribusiness financing that few global banks match in depth. The unit provides corporate and investment banking advisory, structured financing, and specialised agricultural and equipment lending — services that sit at the intersection of commodity markets, farm-level credit, and food-industry capital formation. Operational resilience in that context means keeping complex credit pipelines, commodity-linked risk systems, and client reporting platforms running without disruption.

Ter Haar's mandate as COO will centre on resilience, execution efficiency, and what the bank describes as closer partnership between operations and the front-facing business units. That alignment is increasingly consequential as agribusiness clients face tighter working-capital cycles driven by input-cost inflation, freight volatility, and shifting trade flows across North American grain, protein, and specialty-crop sectors. Lenders with well-integrated operational platforms are better positioned to price and structure deals quickly in that environment.

The food and agribusiness finance segment has also drawn renewed attention from larger commercial banks, putting pressure on specialist institutions like Rabobank to differentiate on service quality and execution speed rather than balance-sheet size alone. Internal promotions of experienced operators — rather than external hires who require an onboarding runway — can shorten the time needed to implement strategic priorities. What's Next

Ter Haar acknowledged the operational momentum already built under his interim tenure. "I look forward to continuing to build on the progress we have made, strengthening connectivity across our teams and ensuring Rabobank remains well positioned to serve clients with the expertise, reliability and forward-looking solutions they expect from us," he said. No specific operational targets or headcount changes were disclosed alongside the appointment.
