Sara Lee Frozen Bakery is extending its Sweet Moments single-serve platform with six new products — three individual cheesecakes and three individual cakes — targeting the growing retail segment of consumers seeking smaller, more frequent indulgence rather than occasion-driven dessert purchases.
Cobbler Success Drives Expansion
The expansion follows a stronger-than-expected market debut for Sweet Moments Cobblers, which launched last fall in three flavors: Berry Bliss Crumble, Salted Caramel Peach, and Orchard Apple Cinnamon. Each heats in 60 seconds. The cobbler line now represents more than one-third of Sara Lee's total fruit pie business and ranks among the top dollar-velocity items in the frozen dessert category. Distribution has reached more than 5,000 stores nationwide, including Walmart, Albertsons, Publix, Wakefern, and H-E-B.
That commercial traction is giving the Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based manufacturer the basis to extend the platform into adjacent formats. "We believe the next wave of growth in the frozen bakery category will come from creating more occasions to enjoy it," said Johnni Rodgers, Chief Marketing Officer at Sara Lee Frozen Bakery. "The category has traditionally been centered around celebrations and special occasions, but consumers are increasingly looking for smaller, more frequent moments of indulgence that fit into everyday life."
The Six New SKUs
Beginning this fall, Sara Lee is launching two new Sweet Moments collections. Sweet Moments Individual Four-Layered Cheesecakes arrive in Strawberry Shortcake, Lemon Blueberry, and Fudgey Brownie varieties, each combining creamy cheesecake with sauces, toppings, and either a graham or shortcake-inspired crust. Sweet Moments Individual Cakes — Gooey Butter Cake, Chocolate Chip Brookie, and Cinnamon Caramel Crunch — are designed for a warm, fresh-from-the-oven texture and are ready in 20 to 30 seconds in a microwave.
The product development originated in consumer focus groups that identified a discrete end-of-day consumption occasion — post-obligation downtime — that existing frozen dessert formats were not adequately serving. Sara Lee built the platform around high-indulgence flavors, individual portion sizing, and, where applicable, a heated serving format.
Macro Tailwinds for Single-Serve
Demand for portion-flexible desserts is being shaped by several converging forces. Derek Wong, Director of Marketing, Retail at Sara Lee, cited smaller household sizes, the wider cultural embrace of "little treat" behavior, and the growing adoption of GLP-1 weight-loss medications as independent factors collectively steering consumers toward lower-volume, premium-quality indulgence. "Together they point to greater interest in smaller portions and more flexible ways to indulge," Wong said. "Sweet Moments sits naturally at that intersection, giving consumers a premium dessert experience sized for one and giving retailers an opportunity to create occasions beyond traditional celebrations."
The single-serve frozen dessert segment has drawn increasing investment from branded manufacturers seeking to reframe freezer-aisle purchases as everyday impulse buys rather than planned party staples. For grocery retailers, the format also offers higher per-unit price points and strong velocity metrics — both factors that influence shelf-space decisions in competitive frozen bakery sets. Sara Lee's distribution footprint across mass, conventional grocery, and regional supermarket chains positions the expanded Sweet Moments line for broad initial retail coverage. The company operates bakeries across the United States under brands including Chef Pierre, Bistro Collection, Superior on Main, and Cyrus O'Leary's, supplying both retail and foodservice channels.
For operators and retail buyers tracking the frozen dessert category, the Sweet Moments performance data — particularly the one-third fruit pie share figure generated within a single fiscal year — signals meaningful category incrementality rather than simple cannibalization of existing Sara Lee SKUs.
