The Numbers

Smoothie King reported same-store sales growth of 9.0% in July 2026, capping a second quarter in which the Dallas-based smoothie franchise outpaced the broader quick-service restaurant industry by nearly four times on comparable-sales growth. The chain has posted positive same-store sales every month of 2026 to date. Over the longer arc, system sales climbed 64.0% from 2020 through 2025, while average unit volumes rose 27.0% over the same five-year span — figures the brand says underscore the durability of its model even as many QSR peers lean on promotional discounting to maintain traffic.

Food Platform Gains Traction

The immediate catalyst for the July surge was the June launch of Chicken Flatbreads, described by management as the brand's most significant oven-based food innovation to date. The introduction builds on Smoothie King's 2025 Power Eats Menu — its first nationwide food rollout — which won Nation's Restaurant News' MenuMasters Healthful Innovation award in 2026. To support the expanded food platform without eroding the brand's operationally simple model, Smoothie King absorbed the equipment cost, rolling out ovens system-wide at no charge to franchisees. The company is also deploying AI-driven back-of-house technology aimed at improving throughput and reducing execution complexity. The food push reflects a calculated pivot: smoothie-only daypart exposure carries inherent traffic limits, and adding food SKUs that pair with core beverages extends check size and visit frequency without requiring a full kitchen overhaul.

Franchise Pipeline Accelerates

On the unit-growth front, Smoothie King opened 19 new locations across 11 states in Q2 2026 — including Minnesota, Michigan, Colorado, and New York — and added 32 new store opening commitments to its development pipeline, with multi-unit agreements signed in Arkansas, Ohio, and Florida. The quarter also produced the brand's highest volume of qualified franchise inquiries in a single quarter since the company began tracking the metric in 2017, a signal that operator-level economics are resonating in a capital-cautious environment. Store count has grown 76.0% over the past decade, equating to a compound annual growth rate of roughly 6.0%. With more than 1,250 units nationwide, the chain ranks among the five fastest-growing franchised restaurant concepts in the U.S., according to Technomic Top 500 data.

"Consumers are placing a greater emphasis on health and wellness than ever before, and with more than five decades of nutritional expertise, Smoothie King is uniquely positioned to lead that movement," said Gavin Felder, President and Chief Financial Officer of Smoothie King. Felder also pointed to the brand's lower investment costs relative to traditional QSR concepts as a competitive advantage in recruiting multi-unit operators.

The results arrive as the broader fast-casual and QSR landscape navigates persistent cost pressures and softening consumer discretionary spending. Smoothie King's ability to sustain positive comps without heavy discounting — while simultaneously expanding its food offering and franchisee base — positions it as a notable outlier in the health-and-wellness foodservice segment. For franchise investors evaluating concepts in the better-for-you QSR category, the unit-economics narrative — oven rollout at brand cost, AI operational support, and a growing AUV trajectory — will likely draw continued scrutiny as the chain heads into the back half of 2026.
