Tempo, the ready-to-heat meal delivery service operated by Home Chef and part of The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) family of companies, is rolling out a Protein Max meal line that delivers at least 40 grams of protein per single serving — a threshold that positions the offering at the premium end of the fast-growing functional convenience food segment. Meals retail from $16.48 per serving and heat in two minutes.
The Numbers
At least six Protein Max SKUs will rotate on the weekly menu, spanning proteins from grilled chicken and braised beef to pulled pork. Initial offerings include Braised Beef Tomato Ragù Cavatappi, Tomato Truffle Chicken Gemelli, Japanese BBQ Pulled Pork with garlic rice, Hibachi Teriyaki Chicken Thighs, Smoky Chipotle Beef Burrito Bowl, and BBQ Smokehouse Pulled Pork Bowl. All recipes incorporate fiber-rich ingredients — vegetables, legumes, and scratch-made sauces — alongside the elevated protein count. The Protein Max tier extends Tempo's existing protein-focused range, which had set a 30-gram-per-serving baseline.
Why It Matters
The launch is calibrated to a measurable market shift. According to Circana, protein ranked as the second most sought-after ingredient attribute among U.S. consumers in 2026, trailing only vegetables. Andrew Isabel, VP of new product development at Tempo, said protein-packed meals are "the number one response by far" when the company surveys customers on desired menu additions. That demand signal is broadly consistent with category-wide trends: meal-kit and ready-to-eat operators have accelerated protein-forward SKU development as GLP-1 medication adoption and mainstream wellness culture reshape purchasing behavior in both grocery and foodservice channels.
Nigel Palmer, executive R&D chef at Tempo, noted that the formulation challenge was preserving flavor profiles associated with comfort-food classics — ragù pasta, burrito bowls, hibachi — while hitting the 40-gram protein floor and maintaining fiber density. The dual nutritional mandate reflects a broader operator strategy of making high-performance meals accessible to consumers who are not exclusively fitness-focused.
What's Next
Tempo has simultaneously introduced a freshly made breakfast tier to its menu, featuring items such as a Greek-Style Breakfast Scramble with spinach and roasted potatoes and a Classic Protein Pancake Breakfast with sausage and scrambled eggs, each delivering 20 or more grams of protein. The breakfast expansion broadens the service's addressable daypart, a move that meal-kit and direct-to-consumer food brands have increasingly pursued to improve order frequency and subscriber retention. Tempo's wider dietitian-approved menu now spans more than 30 options across wellness filters including GLP-1 Smart, Calorie and Carb-Conscious, Fiber-Rich, Pescatarian, and Anti-Inflammatory. As a Home Chef brand under Kroger's umbrella, Tempo benefits from the retailer's logistics infrastructure — a competitive advantage in the capital-intensive last-mile delivery segment that has thinned the field of independent meal-kit operators over the past three years.
